(ZAF), a developer of next-generation battery technologies, announced today that it has completed recent capital raise. Included in the $22 million Series A funding round were investments from institutional and strategic investors including Élevage Capital Management, Catalus Capital, Holt Ventures, and Coventry Asset Management. ZAF will use the funds to accelerate the commercialization and adoption of its nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery technology and expand its manufacturing capacity.

The company will use the investment to meet the growing customer demands of its NiZn technology in key markets like the large-scale data storage, telecommunications, healthcare, and commercial trucking industries that are in need of powerful, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly battery solutions. ZAF is also currently working with three segments of the US Department of the Defense on energy storage solutions that where the NiZn batteries provide significant performance enhancements over current solutions. Funding will further enable ZAF to accelerate licensing and joint venture negotiations and to commercialize NiZn batteries with both domestic and international strategic partners.

Demand for ZAF’s NiZn technology as a replacement for lead-acid batteries in key market segments continues to grow. ZAF’s NiZn chemistry can reduce the footprint of lead acid data center UPS systems by 40% and because NiZn lasts over twice as long as lead acid, it will reduce the number of batteries consumed by up to 75%. ZAF’s NiZn battery also yields twice the energy density of lead-acid batteries at less than a quarter of the cost, making them smaller, lighter and less expensive. Canalys: Worldwide smartphone shipments fall 13% due to coronavirus

SINGAPORE, April 30, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the smartphone market in Q1 2020, with shipments falling 13% to 272 million units. Samsung returned to the top of the market, but its shipments fell 17% to 60 million. Huawei shipped 49 million, as its mix continues to shift toward China and away from overseas markets due to its US Entity List status. Apple was the third largest vendor, down 8% with 37 million shipments. Xiaomi, the best performer in the top five, managed 9% growth to hit 30 million units, while Vivo finished fifth with 24 million units, up 3%.

The smartphone market entered 2020 in good health, having just recorded two consecutive quarters of growth. “But demand for new devices has been crushed,” said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton. “In February, when the coronavirus was centered on China, vendors were mainly concerned about how to build enough smartphones to meet global demand. But in March, the situation flipped on its head. Smartphone manufacturing has now recovered, but as half the world entered lockdown, sales plummeted. Poor business results, employee redundancies and furloughs are causing a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty. Smartphones are still a necessity for most people, and device availability in online channels has enabled those who need to replace a broken or lost phone to do so. But many customers who would have bought a new smartphone as a luxury have delayed that purchase.”

“Few smartphone vendors were able to withstand the impact,” said Canalys Analyst Shengtao Jin. “Samsung was in a positive position in February, due to its manufacturing focus in Korea and Vietnam. But this advantage quickly dissipated as COVID-19 spread around the world. Apple was one of the least affected vendors, owing to strong sales of the iPhone 11 in the early stages of the quarter. Its recent iPhone SE launch is strategically vital, as Apple needs to prop up iPhone shipments as its flagship customers await 5G devices. Huawei was forced to juggle the dual impact of coronavirus and its ongoing US Entity List problems. Its overseas shipments plummeted 35% as it launched its first P series handset family without Google Mobile Services, the P40. But channels are wary of exposing themselves to the risk of these untested products, so they are ranged in fewer channels than their predecessors, and initial channel orders are lower than Huawei would expect.”

“The impact on smartphone channels is colossal,” said Canalys Analyst Vincent Thielke. “Omni-channel retailers in strict lockdown regions, such as Europe, are doing their best to shift offline store stock into online distribution channels, but this is costly, and their capacity, in terms of warehousing, haulage and delivery, is not geared up for a full switch to online. This also limits the brand-new devices they need to buy from vendors and distributors in the short term. In these regions, it is the ecommerce channels that will have a clear advantage in the coming weeks.”
“Most smartphone companies expect Q2 to represent the peak of the coronavirus’ impact,” said Stanton. “It will test the mettle of the industry, and some companies, especially offline retailers, will fail without government support. As lockdowns around the world start to lift, the full economic damage will become visible. Smartphone companies must adapt their strategies to mitigate the impact, as cashflow will be critical in the coming months. But if they cut back too much on product spend, marketing spend and new strategic initiatives, they risk losing agility, and will lose ground to rivals once demand bounces back. It is vital to strike a balance.”

They thought outside their synagogue walls and outside their own congregation and members. Kesher Israel knew their entire Philadelphia and suburban Philadelphia community were seeking community, wanting to be uplifted and wanted to feel connected.

Kesher Israel began hosting virtual services over Zoom and Facebook Live not only to keep social distancing orders also to reach more residents who they could help by offering their services with no membership dues. While many other religious organizations have used Zoom and Facebook Live most have only shared those services with congregation members using private Zoom links and invitations or going live on closed/secret Facebook groups that you would only be a member of if you belonged to their congregation.

Kesher Israel has had people attend their virtual services from Argentina, Brazil, Mississippi, New Jersey, Mexico and Chicago as well as many other areas. “People are seeking religious practice and prayers right now. This is the way we can practice religion and not separate ourselves from one another, at least virtually for now. We know that people need togetherness and through our virtual community outreach we are helping Philadelphia and surrounding residents get virtual programs that give them a sense of certainty during this uncertain time. People are anxious for connection and are grateful to us for providing what they are seeking”, Levine said.

While sheltering in place may not give Philadelphia residents the sense of connection and community they seek, Kesher Israel is providing this. In fact, the synagogue says all are welcome to attend the Facebook Live services held right from their Facebook Page on Friday nights at 6:30 PM (EDT) and Saturday mornings at 10:30 AM (EDT). Members of the Jewish faith from all sects and with varying beliefs, non-Jews, as well as some agnostics, atheist’s and people with no particular religious belief or upbringing have been attending and are fully welcome to attend. I attend every week as I feel more comfort, inspiration and hope by praying with others and hearing the spiritual tunes and uplifting words. Here we all are, still watching the updated coronavirus news on television as it appears in front of our eyes from around the world. Now, in our living room, we can know everything we need to know. We’ve been told to be patient and watch day after day, while longing for the time our social distancing will end.

United in fear, we are stopped in our tracks. It’s as if there is a God who is saying, “Stop.” “Love one another.” And “Appreciate the great gift of the life I have given you.”

Do we have a choice? The only choice that makes sense is to follow the rules, obey the experts, and remain patient for that future day when we’ll all be free again.

Of course, life as we knew it is no more. The priority of making money has easily surrendered to preventing the spread of infection. Even if we are bored or tired of staying home during the ravages of this plague, it’s inconceivable and even reckless to carry on and put people’s lives at risk.

Businesses have closed, and we want them to reopen. Production and distribution of goods throughout the world have been drastically affected, and we want to start it all up again. But we’re told to wait a little longer, and perhaps a little longer again. As we adapt to the new normal, respecting all the rules with everyone’s health in mind, we face the scary future. What should become very clear to us all is that our individual survival depends on the unity of mankind, which means compliance, not selfishness. No man is an island. We are all interconnected. We cannot survive alone.

The Chinese will probably emerge first. The Italians will also come back to life eventually. Koreans and others will as well. Here in America we cannot foresee when we’ll be back to business as usual, so it’s hard to be calm and ride the wave. Still, it’s our duty to do whatever it takes to see it through. Staying home is not that hard to do. From our window onto the world, we can find the strength to wait patiently and look for signs of recovery, while helping those who need it.

Four hundred years ago in England, John Donne wrote a famous poem while recovering from a serious illness. This is the human condition:

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.
